HCMC KICKED OFF PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE PROJECT LINKING DISTRICT 1 WITH THU THIEM AREA

The People’s Committee of HCMC has recently approved the plan to select architectural design for a pedestrian bridge crossing the Saigon River, connecting the center of District 1 (the junction of Nguyen Hue St. and Ton Duc Thang St.) to the Thu Thien New Urban Area (District 2).

The pedestrian bridge will be located between Thu Thiem 2 Bridge (corner of Ton Duc Thang St., Ba Son area) and Thu Thiem Tunnel. The head of the pedestrian bridge in District 1 will be located in Bach Dang port park area, adjacent to Nguyen Hue St.. As for District 2, the head of the bridge will be located at the river park in area A, at the south of Central Square of Thu Thiem New Urban Area.

According to the HCMC People’s Committee, the design of the pedestrian bridge must be in harmony with the surrounding space and easy to memorise, highly aesthetic. In addition, there must be a parking area and support facilities such as toilets, water counters, etc. at 2 points at the bridgehead. The design must meet the requirements for ambulance and rescue vehicles if they need to cross the bridge.

In particular, there is also a lane for bicycles. Pedestrians, bicyclists, disabled people, children and elderly can easily enter and cross the bridge.

Thu Thiem New Urban Area is expected to have a total of 5 bridges and tunnels crossing the Saigon River, connecting District 2 with District 1, District 4 and District 7.
